Are You an Eco-sexual?
Adult News

Stephens and SprinkleEver since we wrote about eco-porn, we’ve noticed a lot of interest in “green” sex.  People want to know how to express their love of the environment through … well, making love.

Although porn doesn’t yet come with “100% Certified Organic” labels – and no, there’s no Fair Trade porn movement just yet – two women are trying to change all that.

Professor Elizabeth M. Stephens and former porn star Annie M. Sprinkle have invented what they call “SexEcology: the art of exploring the Earth as a lover.”

Stephens and Sprinkle: An Unlikely Duo

You wouldn’t expect an academic and a porn star to be best buddies, let alone lovers and life partners, but Sprinkle and Stephens disagree.  Stephens explains:

“Porn stars and academics are cultural heroes.”

It helps, of course, that former porn star Sprinkle went on to gain a Ph.D. from the Institute for the Advanced Study of Human Sexuality in San Francisco.

And it certainly doesn’t hurt that Professor Stephens describes herself as a “sexy dyke playboy.”

The Rise of the EcoSexual

The two explore the frontier between ideology and sex with their show, “Dirty Sex-ecology, or How to Make Love with the Earth.”

They explain that their work “is designed to create the desire in others to love, cherish and honor the earth as they would their own lover, instead of expecting the earth to take care of them as one might expect from one’s mother.”

So how do you make love with the Earth?

Professor Stephens tells the Harvard Crimson, “Give her a massage with your feet.”  Sprinkle adds, “Lick her, smell her, protect her.”

The impetus behind this novel merging of sex and ecology was the couple’s desire to see human beings treat their natural environment with greater respect.  Stephens explains:

“…If you take care of something erotically, you’ll take care of it in other ways.”

She projects the rise of a new class of human beings.  Not heterosexuals, not homosexuals, but eco-sexuals.

“An eco-sexual is someone who takes the earth as their lover. This is now someone who’s going to take care of the earth.”

Can You Have a Sexual Experience with Nature?

Sex in NatureMany people find that their animal desires awaken in Nature.  Sex outdoors, whether in a tent or on the beach, has a raw urgency about it that indoor sex can’t match.

Outdoor porn has always a huge fan base.  Perhaps it’s because it’s real and earthy, two adjectives that don’t always describe the plastic porn and bottle blondes seen in more mainstream productions.

Stephens and Sprinkle believe that many of our earliest sexual experiences occur in nature.  For example, Stephens believes that her first sexual experience occurred while riding horses: “The horse is between your legs; there’s just no way to avoid that, you know?”

Sprinkle adds that her first sexual experience was water, as she was a beach bunny growing up: “Before I became sexual at 17 with a person—with a man—I was really making love with the water.”

So is sex-ecology just a strange academic curiosity, or does it truly herald the rise of a new ethos in human sexuality?
